Tehran States It May Rejoin US Atomic Discussions if Treated with 'Dignity' and 'Respect'
Iran is willing to reinitiate atomic talks with the United States as long as it is approached with "dignity" and "respect", Iran's foreign minister has announced.
The Iranian diplomat stated solely negotiations worked, and revealed recent overtures had come from mediators to reopen discussions with the American leadership. He claimed Iran had zero secret atomic facilities, and Tehran had not yet reached a point to allow the global atomic watchdog to access attacked atomic facilities for protective measures.
Walking a Difficult Course
The foreign minister is navigating a difficult course since Iran aims to avoid be seen to be acting from a stance of weakness, and he emphatically stated that Iran had come out more powerful in military terms and emotionally from the coordinated strike on its enrichment centers in June.
He was talking at a security conference in Tehran where he restated that Iran had "an inalienable right to process nuclear material within its borders that it will perpetually retain" – the main reason of the deadlock in the prior discussions.
Prior Talks Abruptly Concluded
The earlier sessions of discussions between the United States and Iran were ended suddenly and acrimonious conclusion on 12 June when the Israeli government, with Washington's assistance, attacked Iranian nuclear sites in a fortnight-long engagement that culminated with Donald Trump claiming the sites had been obliterated. Afterward, European countries employed their privilege to restore international penalties, but Iran asserts they have not had a major impact.
Perfect Agreement Proposed
Iranian officials said they felt they had attained a "magic solution" to the uranium processing matter in earlier negotiations, when it was decided an local partnership with American involvement could process nuclear material. The two nations would have been able to declare success since local refinement would have continued and the US could be certain that Iran's enrichment initiative was entirely non-military.
It had not been decided in the discussions that American atomic experts could function within Iranian territory, but that was a reasonable assumption of the partnership suggestion. Officials asserted three times they had achieved a deal with Washington's diplomat Steve Witkoff only for the agreement to disintegrate due to "detractors in America".
Current Position
Iran's diplomats declared the consortium offer was now no longer available, but it seems highly likely the offer could be resurrected in various formats if discussions reopen.
The US president recently said he had been obtaining communications that Iran wanted to resume discussions, but in private Iran's diplomats say they are not yet obtaining clear proposals from the United States either explicitly or from significant local go-betweens, such as the Qatari government, Egypt, Oman and Saudi Arabia. The Iranian foreign ministry has been charged of passivity in the face of Trump's direct instinctive approach, but Tehran asserts dialogue is not part of a performance.
Diplomatic Position
In his address to the gathering, designed to paint the US as a hegemonic power that misuses the idea of international law, the foreign minister declared the 12-day war showed the dispute could not be ended by combat operations. He asserted the strikes began with a American requirement for an unconditional Iranian surrender and culminated with an unconditional call for a halt to hostilities.
Iran is convinced the initial Israeli attacks were mounted with full US knowledge and collaboration, making faith challenging to rebuild.
Dialogue Remains the Primary Answer
Araghchi declared: "Tehran was not the one that had abandoned dialogue; it was the United States and the western countries that had repeatedly tried to impose their demands during the talks. Diplomacy can still be active and stays the final answer to settle conflicts, but its criteria, guidelines and principles must be adhered to."
"If they talk to the citizens of Tehran with the tone of respect and honor, they will get a reply in the equivalent tone."
Recovery and Rebuilding
In what is described by Tehran representatives as the conflict of recovery and reconstruction, Araghchi stated he was confident Iran's defence capabilities "are considerably enhanced than preceding 13 or 14 June of this year. All our capabilities have been restored. We gained many lessons from this war; we have identified our own weaknesses and the weaknesses of the opponent."
He added: "We managed to survive this conflict. Our atomic expertise, which they intended to eliminate, stays intact. The sites and machinery, if eliminated, will be restored; what is essential is the will of the citizens of Tehran and then the social solidarity that they aimed at, but did not succeed to break. The nation of Iran have become more resilient, more united, and more endorsing of the leadership and the state in the aftermath of this assault."
