Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.

The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police report initial examinations suggest the liquid was most likely human blood.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.

Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.

A senior representative commented the attack left him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
